Self-Motivation for the Entrepreneur

Choosing to become self employed can create new challenges for the entrepreneur in terms of self-motivation. Working for someone else often embosses stringent rules with regards to time keeping and job performance is all of a sudden become absent from the equation.

The person working for themselves adopts the role of motivating themselves as there is no superior to maintain discipline or immediate retribution distributed as a consequence of not adhering to the corporate policies.

Whilst the entrepreneur might be highly motivated at the point of starting a new business, as time draws on and especially once a measure of success has been achieved, that initial enthusiasm might begin to wane.

Self motivation, the desire to go to work and perform to the best of their abilities then becomes an issue for the entrepreneur. Any success enjoyed by the business since its inception would probably be due to the direct efforts of the business owner.

Any absence of this infusion of work might result in a decline in customer focus and service which in turn will most likely create an unfavourable business environment.

The initial self motivation used to conceive, launch and grow the new business need to continue as new challenges appear in the form of competition. New goals and objectives should be drawn up to represent the new stage of the commercial cycle.

Of course the opportunity exists to set up a new second business if the entrepreneur is predominantly inspired through this process and not so much by actually running a business.

Other projects which might motivate an entrepreneur once the initial set-up tasks have been completed might include:
Carrying out a review of the business processes in order to improve delivery to customers and reduce operating costs. This type of activity is not dissimilar to starting a new business and thus might rejoin the entrepreneur with their motivational persona.

Specific projects aimed at expanding the business such as launching new products or services. This creates new challenges for the entrepreneur and perhaps a string measure of motivation in order to succeed in this new venture.

The hiring of staff often inspires a business owner to lead by example and thus regain some of their motivation. New staff will require training which the entrepreneur will undertake and perhaps create a more enjoyable working environment where discussion, empowerment and synergy can occur.
