First Holiday Since Starting

It is very likely that within the first few years of starting a new business the entrepreneur would not be in a comfortable situation whereby they would be able to take a holiday.

Financial constraints within the business and potentially on personal expenditure and time commitments often render the prospects of having a first holiday beyond the practical reach of most business owners.

Most entrepreneurs are reasonably content with foregoing holidays as this is just one of the many sacrifices they would have had to have made in order to start their new business.

As the business operations get underway and some measure of organisational stability is achieved the owner might consider taking their first holiday since starting the new business. This might be to alleviate sighs of business stress or to appease family members who would have also made sacrifices during the start-up period.

Preparation for the period of absence is crucial despite whatever efficient systems are currently in place to manage the business. Even in situations where a business has numerous staff member, it is often the entrepreneur who would make strategic decisions and provide a valuable source of knowledge and experience which others within the organisation will have come to rely on.

Modern communication facilities enable emails to be checked from worldwide locations and features such as remote desktop can provide on the spot, real-time interaction with the organisation.

On the basis that the first holiday is sought in whole or in part to revitalise the entrepreneur then this important objective will not be accomplished where access to the office computer system is constant and deliberate.

Having said that, a business owner on holiday who is aloof and carefree might discover their business is a weakened upon their return. Striking a healthy balance between monitoring the business and providing essential support and completely detaching oneself from the organisation is important.

When the business owner is away from the operations of the organisation it can result in staff adapting, using their initiative and stretching themselves in ways that would only be possible when they are without constant support.

The results can be advantageous to an entrepreneur who returns from holiday to find that all is well with staff and customers alike.
